"Garnett Crafts was formed during the lockdown in 2020 when I needed something to focus on whilst my decorating business was mothballed due to COVID-19. For some time now I have been making puzzles mainly using the designs hand drawn by Harvey Byler, an Amish gentleman in Ohio, USA. He has been drawing these by hand for over 20 years.
I started to post a few of the display puzzles on social media and it soon became apparent that there was a demand for a well-crafted and beautifully finished hardwood version of this popular display puzzle. My website was soon developed and I also launched a store on the shopping platform Numonday that supports independent sellers from the UK.
The crafting of the display puzzles using my scrollsaw is an enjoyable hobby and it is something that has become really important to me. The real highlight this year has been being able to turn my hobby into a small artisan business which is giving me great pleasure and satisfaction.
I have found that the wood that suits my style of crafting best is a hardwood called Red Grandis which is part of the eucalyptus family. It gives a lovely finish after I have applied the two coats of finishing oil by hand to each individual piece. My display puzzles are shipped with care using a tissue paper lined posting box.
My plans going forward are to take part in physical craft markets and fairs, with my sights firmly set on a local weekly craft market, and to look at launching new products including art prints and other craft-based ranges. I endeavour to adhere to the theme of quality craftmanship and finish using sustainable materials; the key style coming from my scrollsaw with a quality hand finishing." — NICK
